the death sentence
which better men have already

I shall die like a man for
Ireland's sake. From Ãamonn Ceannt
A letter from Éamonn Ceannt (1881-1916) to his wife Áine Ceannt (née Ní Bhraonáin)
(1880-1954). The letter was written from Richmond Barracks after Ceannt's trial and
after the death sentence passed. A number of executions had already been carried out
and Ceannt writes that his only regret is that he can no longer show his what he thinks
of her. He will 'die like a man for Ireland's sake'.Éamonn Ceannt was one of the leaders
of the Easter Rising and a signatory of the Proclamation of the Irish Republic. During
the Rising he commanded the garrison in the South Dublin Union. Following the surrender
he was tried by court-martial and sentenced to death. He was executed on 8 May 1916.
