Letter from Major C. Harold Heathcote to Dr Kathleen Lynn, 13 October 1916
Kathleen Lynn,
Claim No. 611
Kathleen Lynn, 9 Belgrave Road, Rathmines. Madam, I have received your letter of 11/10/16 and have
noted its contents. The matter of the recovery of your property has been
engaging my attention since I last wrote you. If you could find an opportunity for doing so I
shall be very much obliged if you would call upon me
in my Office here to discuss this matter again with me.
I feel sure that you will readily understand that as it
was not until the 4th of July that you wrote to me
intimating that you had lost property in Liberty Hall and
not until August 19, when you called upon me in Richmond
Barracks that you made any claim for your Motor Car,
bicycle, etc., it has been very difficult for me after the
lapse of so many weeks to trace the disposition of your
property. C. Harold Heathcote.
Major.
O. i/c Prisoners' Effects.
Room 32 Hospital, Headquarters, Irish Command, Parkgate, DUBLIN. 12/10/16 .
This is a letter to Dr Kathleen Lynn (1874-1955) from Major C. Harold Heathcote. Heathcote was officer in charge of prisoners' effects in Richmond Barracks, where most of those arrested after the Rising were initially held. The letter is in reference to Lynn's attempts to secure the return of items taken from her after her arrest following the Rising.Dr Kathleen Lynn was a medical practitioner, a suffragist, a nationalist, and a revolutionary. Lynn was Chief Medical Officer of the Irish Citizen Army during Easter 1916 and was a part of the City Hall garrison, of which she took command of the garrison after the death of Seán Connolly on the first day of the Rising. After independence, Lynn dedicated much time and energy towards the improvement of public health, and played a significant role in the eradication of tuberculosis in Ireland.
