Letter from Private M. Cahill to Lady Clonbrock, 17 April 1916

1 Dear Lady Clonbrock I received your parcel of cigarettes
all right and I am, very thankful to
you for it. Yours Respectifully M Cahill 2 Lady Clonbrock. Clonbrock. Ahascragh. Ireland. A request Most of these postcards will naturally be returned to the folks at home who are sending tobacco and cigarettes. And if the message on this post card is of more than personal interest, then the friend who recieves this post card would greatly help the good work by sending it to the Organizer of the Tobacco Fund. It would probably help the Organiser to stimulate furter subscriptions, and,- a lot more money is re- quired to keep up supplies tp brave men.

Letter from Private M. Cahill, 5th Company, Connaught Rangers, to Lady Clonbrock (1839-1928). Cahill writes to thank Lady Clonbrock for cigarettes she has sent via the 'Tobacco Fund' in London. The 'Tobacco Fund' was managed by the 'Weekly Dispatch' newspaper to supply cigarettes to servicemen in the British army and the soldier would have received the postcard with the cigarettes.Augusta Caroline Dillon (née Crofton) was the wife of Luke Gerald Dillon (1834-1917), the 4th Baron of Clonbrock, Co. Galway and the daughter of Lord Crofton of Mote Park (Edward Henry Churchill Crofton, 3rd Baron), Co. Roscommon. Aged 75 at the outbreak of war, Lady Clonbrock, worked closely with the Irish Women's Association to send basic necessities to Irish POWs. Many of her care packages went to members of the Connaught Rangers imprisoned in Limburg near Cologne.
