Letter from Lady Clonbrock to Eliza Chamier, 24 May 1916
Col. Chamier with enclosed,
but thought perhaps that
you would kindly make
some enquiries as to the existence
of 5473 Michael Sweeney - C.R.
I have 8464 Michael Sweeney
and a James & Patrick Sweeney
on my list, but I know nothing
of 5473. It is very strange that
the S.W.A know nothing of him. Sincerely Augusta Clonbrock
Letter from Lady Clonbrock (1840-1928) to Eliza Mary Adelaide Chamier (née Tyrell) (c. 1869-1940). Lady Clonbrock writes to inquire about the existence of Michael Sweeney. She states that she has a Michael Sweeney registered under a different number and a James and Patrick Sweeney but that it is unusual that the Irish Women's Association knows nothing of this particular Michael Sweeney. Eliza was the wife of Henry Deschamps Chamier (1862-1950), a colonel serving in the British army with the Connaught Rangers.Augusta Caroline Dillon (née Crofton) was the wife of Luke Gerald Dillon (1834-1917), the 4th Baron of Clonbrock, Co. Galway and the daughter of Lord Crofton of Mote Park (Edward Henry Churchill Crofton, 3rd Baron), Co. Roscommon. Aged 75 at the outbreak of war, Lady Clonbrock, worked closely with the Irish Women's Association to send basic necessities to Irish POWs. Many of her care packages went to members of the Connaught Rangers imprisoned in Limburg near Cologne.
