Letter from P. C. McCarthy to Herbert Henry Asquith, 13 May 1916
1
PRIVATE Irish office Gallowshill, Leap, Skibereen, Co. Cork, May 13th 1916 Right Hon. Sir, Having been creditably informed that several
of the men National Teachers in Ireland who have
attained the age of 65 years, and reports of their
teaching in their schools have been either fair or
satisfactory for some years past, are now under notice
from the Board of National Education to retire
on full pension the 30th of next June. Several of these teachers, still capable of
discharging their duties as National Teachers,
are quite willing to continue teaching in their
schools during the continuance of the present war
with the view of economising for the Treasury I hope you will have this reasonable
matter considered at once by the Lords of His
Majesty's Treasury and that they will at once
cause the Board of National Education to
withdraw the notice of retirement on such
teachers. Certainly the young teachers intended
to succeed them are of military age. Sincerely hoping that our English Army
and their Allies will ere long be victorious. I remain, Rt. Hon. Sir,
Your humble & most obdt. Servant, P.C. McCarthy. P.S. Young teachers coming from Training Colleges
towards the end of next June, of military age,
might be considered for voluntary enlistment.
P. G. M.C. To Rt. Hon. H.H. Asquith K.C. M.P. Prime Minister of England %C. 10 Downing Street, Whitehall S.W. London. Referred to
The Secretaries, Commis.of N.E
For favor of report

Letter from P.C. McCarthy to the desk of British Prime Minister Herbert Henry Asquith (1852–1928). McCarthy writes to notify Asquith that several male teachers who are set to retire soon wish to continue to work during the war so that those fit and able young men that are set to replace them are free to serve in the army.Herbert Henry Asquith was Liberal Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1908 to 1916.
