              <hi rend="underline">PRIVATE</hi>  <seg type="unclear">Irish office</seg>    Gallowshill,  Leap,  Skibereen, Co. Cork,    May 13th 1916   Right <seg type="unclear">Hon.</seg> Sir,   Having been creditably informed that several <lb/>of the men National Teachers in Ireland who have <lb/>attained the age of 65 years, and reports of their <lb/>teaching in their schools have been either <hi rend="underline">fair</hi> or <lb/><hi rend="underline">satisfactory</hi> for <hi rend="underline"> some years past, </hi>are now under <hi rend="underline">notice <lb/>from the Board of National Education to retire <lb/>on full pension the 30th of next June.</hi>  Several of these teachers,<hi rend="underline"> still capable of <lb/>discharging their duties as National Teachers, <lb/>are quite willing to continue teaching</hi> in their <lb/>schools during the <hi rend="underline"> continuance of the present war</hi><lb/>with the view of <hi rend="underline">economising</hi> for the <hi rend="underline">Treasury</hi>  I hope you will have this reasonable <lb/>matter considered at once by the Lords of His <lb/>Majesty's Treasury and that they will at once <lb/>cause the Board of National Education to <lb/><hi rend="underline">withdraw the notice of retirement</hi> on such <lb/>teachers. Certainly the <hi rend="underline">young teachers intended <lb/> to succeed them are of military age.</hi>  Sincerely hoping that our English Army <lb/>and their Allies will ere long be victorious. <seg type="closer"> I remain, Rt. Hon. Sir, <lb/>Your humble &amp; most obdt. Servant,  P.C. McCarthy. </seg> P.S.
