your request to conduct the Retreat for
the opening of the coming Scholastic
Year. So you may count on me for that
purpose. Please let me have a copy of
the Regulations usually followed, and
I should, also, like to have any hints
that you may consider useful whether
for the matter or the manner of the
Retreat. With every best wish,
Faithfully yours, John J. Murphy C.S.S.P. The Right Rev. J. F. Hogan, D.D., President,

A letter from Fr John J. Murphy C.S.Sp., a Congregation of the Holy Spirit priest
in Kimmage, Dublin, to Rev Dr John F. Hogan (1858-1918). In the letter, Fr Murphy
agrees to conduct a retreat to mark the start of the scholastic year and requests
instructions to carry it out.Rev John F Hogan was a priest, author, and president
of St Patrick's College, Maynooth from 1912-1918. Hogan backed the British war effort
by urging seminarians to volunteer as chaplains in the armed forces. It was estimated
that by November 1917 there were between 80 and 100 Maynooth trained priests in the
military.
