               <p>A letter from Fr John J. Murphy C.S.Sp., a Congregation of the Holy Spirit priest in Kimmage, Dublin, to Rev Dr John F. Hogan (1858-1918). In the letter, Fr Murphy agrees to conduct a retreat to mark the start of the scholastic year and requests instructions to carry it out.Rev John F Hogan was a priest, author, and president of St Patrick's College, Maynooth from 1912-1918. Hogan backed the British war effort by urging seminarians to volunteer as chaplains in the armed forces. It was estimated that by November 1917 there were between 80 and 100 Maynooth trained priests in the military.</p>
