Letter from Fr Michael O'Flanagan to Canon Timlin, 27 September 1918
Dublin 6 Sráid Fhearchair,
Áth Cliath 27/9/I8 Very Rev Canon Timlin,
Screen,
Co. Sligo Dr. Canon Timlin In reply to your letter of Sept 25th all I want
to know from you is your authority for the story which you
heard. In telling the story to Mr Keohane I presume you did so
as a friend. I should be very sorry to think that you did it in
the only otheer possible alternative capacity. In either case I think it would be your duty to tell me
who is your authority. I want to go to Mill Milltownpark and trace the story to
its origin. I have no desire to do anything more than protect
myself in a purely ecclesiastical manner, and I wish to do it in
a way that would cause the least possible amount of unpleasant-
ness to you; but I cannot do this unless you are prepared to
co-operate with me as a friend. The criticism of my Sligo speech and Crossna letter to
which you refer has no bearing upon the definite charge
contained in your story. Yours Sincerely, M O'Flanagan
Fr Michael O'Flanagan (1876–1942) was a Catholic priest and well-known nationalist. He was elected vice president of Sinn Féin in 1917. O'Flanagan reiterates his request for the name of the originator of the false rumour stating he made a public display of removing his clerical collar whilst on retreat. He states that Timlin's criticism of his Sligo speech and Crossna letter have no bearing on the definite accusations he feels is being made by Timlin about O'Flanagan threatening to leave the priesthood.
