Letter from Ellen Mary ("Nellie") Daly to Susan Daly, 26 January 1923
1
Knockane,
Firies Jan 26-1923 41/9/2 Dear Susan, Got your welcome letter
a few days ago. Nell was buried at
Killlal Killallagh by her own wish.
She said good bye to everyone and
gave them all some little token.
She left her child of Mary ribbon to
Eileen the baby. She gave Mollie and
Katie Maria handkerchiefs and some
other little things. Kathleen went
home, she was sick but any thing
wouldn't keep here till she'd get
better. She had to stay at Dowds for
she was'nt able to go home. I suppose
they made a show when they heard
of May's death. I was staying at the
Bungalow for the past week. K.M
misses Josie now, she h is tormented
for trying to keep her hands her
hands clean. There is a very nice
little stove in parlour, in the 2 (2) next to the road. She is delighted
how nicely it's working. It warms up
the whole place. Tubby had'nt the
pups yet. We must send Josie a wire
when she will, it will be as good as a
wedding to her when she'll hear it. O! I must tell you about who I saw and
talking to in the jail. My mother got into to see the Brig first of all.
I am afraid she would have a poor
chance u if K M had'nt written a
letter for the Brig. The Stater at the
gate said the Brig was too busy
and could'nt been seen. My mother
said she had spesial word from
himself. He then asked had she a
letter, he took up, and returned
and told her come on. She return
all smiles, and we knew she was
to be let in. She told him there
was too little girls outside, and could
they go in. He said of course. Is'nt KM
a nice lttle girl. We met a nice fellow
named Nolan at the gate, my mother
said we were her daughters, so KM
got in as one of us. Goodness! the
jail is a frightening old place with 3 (3) the lonesome grey colour. I wonder how
J.D got over the great high walls.
When we got inside the inner gate
and turned to left. We went into a
nice little room, it was belong to Nol-
an. We had to wait for a while
as the lads were saying the Rosary
over the graves. The men passed
the window with spades after closing
the graves. After a while Tom came
in. He was in wicked humour over the
execution, but he looked fine. Wille
was'nt in at that time, but after a
while he marched in, as well as Tom
was he was was much better, and in
great humour. They said everything
they before the Stater. He did'nt like
the executions of the lads were out
the time of the Tans. We were there for two hours,
but Nolan told us to say half an
hour. We were going to say good bye
to lads when the rest of the prisoners
came out. You should see the look-
ing they had at all of us. it was so strange
to see anyone. Willie showed us Peter G
standing in a doorway, with a p broad 4 (4) smile as usual. I ran across to him
so he called Mattie and i the rest.
Nolan said we could only stay a
few minutes a the whole would be
coming out. Mattie was a bit thin,
but Unky was as gay as ever. Connie
Casey did'nt come out, and we were
very sorry. We saw a couple more
of the lads we knew also. You
would think the bell-man was out
that everyone knew we were in
Willie showed his room and number
Tom expected to be removed, because
the Brig said there was a bit of
a row the last time he was in
Dublin. I suppose they thought they
had too good a time. I'm sure Tom
will miss Mrs. B parcels, she was
very good to them. Tadie O' was at the Bungalow
today, and he w is'nt over the
effects of the batle yet. The 6 main
people are all shell shocked. Billy
Smith and six or seven more deser-
ted yesterday. Tis unknow what
Billy Smith join next. I bougth bought a canary 5 (5) coloured cardigan for six and six. I
have a new navy dress and Nancy's
is making. God help you if you
thought Flora would write. Jhon Joe
was pleased with the look, altho'
my mother thought it was thrash
I must end now Do'nt mind the
writing as I am tired of it. I won't
post this a few more news days for
I might get more news. Good bye. With love
From Nellie P.S. Bill Kirby and Kate Lynch are
marrying tomorrow. Ellie O sent an
account of a match to Willie Hickey.
Hannan Maria is getting loads of
accounts. N
