9, South Main Street,
CORK. 14th March, 1916. Sir I beg to acknowledge receipt of your letter of the
13th instant, and to state in reply that the observation
attributed to me formed portion of a speech made by me at
a meeting of the Corporation, that this phrase has been
detached from the context which explained my words, and
that if the whole speech as uttered by me were laid before
the Lord Chancellor, he would see that it did not bear
the interpretation which has been placed upon it I, am, Sir,
Your obedient servant. Jeremiah Lane.
To/
Gerald Heran Esq, Lord Chancellor's Secretary,
Four Courts,
DUBLIN.
This is a letter from Jeremiah Lane, a justice of the peace in Cork, to Gerald Horan
(1880-1949) of Lord Chancellor's Secretary's Office. Lane had made comments at a meeting
of Cork Corporation that were considered inappropriate. Lane writes to explain that
the phrase he used at the meeting was taken out of context and would not be interpreted
the same way if the whole speech was heard.
