               <p>This is a letter from Jeremiah Lane, a justice of the peace in Cork, to Gerald Horan (1880-1949) of Lord Chancellor's Secretary's Office. Lane had made comments at a meeting of Cork Corporation that were considered inappropriate. Lane writes to explain that the phrase he used at the meeting was taken out of context and would not be interpreted the same way if the whole speech was heard.</p>

Sir   I beg to acknowledge receipt of your letter of the <lb/>13th instant, and to state in reply that the observation <lb/> attributed to me formed portion of a speech made by me at <lb/> a meeting of the Corporation, that this phrase has been <lb/> detached from the context which explained my words, and <lb/> that if the whole speech as uttered by me were laid before <lb/> the Lord Chancellor, he would see that it did not bear <lb/> the interpretation which has been placed upon it   I, am, Sir, <lb/> Your obedient servant.    Jeremiah Lane.   <lb/>To/ <lb/> Gerald Heran Esq,  Lord Chancellor's Secretary, <lb/> Four Courts, <lb/> DUBLIN.
