256 District Asylum,
Killarney 4 February, 1916 Sir, I beg to acknowledge receipt of your letter
No.252,
dated yesterday, enclosing copy of a letter from Miss
Mary O'Leary to the Inspectors referring to the appoint-
ment of Dressmaker and Nurse. The matter will be duly
submitted to the Committee of Management at their next
meeting on the 24th inst. I am, Sir,
your obedient servant S.W. Duffin
Resident Medical Superintendent James Smith Esq.
Office of Lunatic Asylums,
Dublin Castle.
2
Seartaglin,
Farranfore,
Kerry 1/2,/'16 Sir, May I most respectfully
call your attention to the appointment
of "Dressmaker and Nurse " which
has been carried through at the last
meeting of "Committee of Management"
"Killarney District Lunatic Asylum." The meeting was held on the 27th Inst
and out of the applicants one was
only qualified as regards age; Miss
Cremmin was therefore duly elected
as seamstress for a month pending
observations from Matron and R.M.S. Miss Cremmin had only
one testimonial accompanying her
3
application, and that one was
from a local dressmaker certifying
that Miss Cremmin gave a few
month's apprenticeship — she produced
no more credentials — May I point
out, Sir, that the Advertisement
issued for this important position
was — " that the lady elected should
be able to cut material, sew, for the
female part of the House, possess a
knowledge of Nursing & Housewifery
and to be responsible for same
when the Matron is absent." Miss Cremmin, Sir, does not
show or present any qualifications
whatsoever (she was in third class
leaving School, her mother died some
time ago in the Asylum, at present
her aunt and cousin are there) and
many of the members of the Committee
visibly expressed the opinion that
Miss Cremmin was literally unqualified
for the position, and yet she was
dumped into a job that honestly
she knows nothing about. The facts are really valid and I
was one of the applicants, fully qualified
but being a fortnight short of the age. Trusting to hear from you soon Signed
- Mary O'Leary
The Resident Medical Superintendent asking James Smith Esq. to acknowledge receipt
of Mary O'Leary's letter which is attached.
