TELEPHONE, REGENT 1914. Maxse NATIONAL REVIEW,
14, TAVISTOCK STREET,
COVENT GARDENS, LONDON, W.C. 15th June 1916. Dear Lady Carson, Sir Edward has
the enviable reputation of not
reading letters. It would be so kind of you to hand him
the enclosure. I am appalled and shocked by this Irish
development. The installation of a Sinn Fein Government in
Ireland after the events of the last few weeks seems is
simply putting a premium on crime everywhere. Its
effects in Egypt and India and elsewhere would be incal-
culable. Yours very sincerely, L.J. Maxse
Letter from Leopold Maxse (1864-1932) to Lady Ruby Carson (1881-1966). Ruby was born
in Yorkshire and was the daughter of Lt Col Stephen Frewen. In 1914 she became the
second wife of the prominent Unionist figure Sir Edward Carson (1854-1935). Leopold
"Leo" James Maxse was editor of the conservative British publication, National Review,
between August 1893 and his death in January 1932.
