BISHOPS HOUSE
ST. MICHAELS
LONGFORD My dear Monsignor, I
send you, hereby, all
faculties for the
ordination of
the Ardagh
students, as called
to orders by the
Maynooth Superior In
2
the case of Mr Dooner
— whom I do not
except — I should
like you to tell
him that, if he
breaks down in
health on the
Mission, the
Priests of the
Diocese will
be
very reluctant to
support him. I am yours sincerely + J. Hoare, May 20.1916.
This is a letter from Bishop Joseph Hoare (1842-1927) to Rev Dr John Francis Hogan
(1858-1918). Joseph Hoare was born in Ballymahon, County Longford, and was ordained
Bishop of Ardagh and Clonmacnois on 19 March 1895. He held this post until his death
in 1927. John Francis Hogan was born in County Clare and was a priest, author and
President of St Patrick's College, Maynooth.
Hoare is writing to Hogan to offer faculties (permission) for the ordination of the
Ardagh students into their orders and also writes about the well-being of priests
in his diocese.
