Letter from Patrick Hayes to Anna O'Rahilly, 23 August 1916
letter here this morning.
Yes, I saw the suggestion
in the Kerryman to build
the spire to the memory
of your brother. I could
not think of undertaking
such a heavy work.
& found it difficult
enough to build a
Parochial Hall. It
cost £300 and by that 2
from Ballylongford subscribers
little over £100. The project
of putting in large stained
glass windows has not -
success though at all. I
was just about to com-
mence the work about
a year before the war when
the people prevailed on
me to build the Hall
first. The window scheme
will cost over £500. I
got the plans & specific-
ations from an architect.
Of course in case the
work is not carried out
the money will be ret-
urned to you and your
sister. With Kind Regards,
I remain,
Yours Sincerely, P. Hayes, P.P. Miss Anna O'Rahilly
A letter from Patrick C. Hayes (b.1856) to Anna O'Rahilly, the sister of Michael Joseph O'Rahilly (1875-1916). The letter concerns a suggestion made on the part of Anne to build a spire in the memory of the O'Rahilly. The letter goes on to discuss the cost of such a project. Michael Joseph O'Rahilly, self-described as 'The' O'Rahilly, was involved in the procurement of arms in the lead-up to the Rising and was involved in the Howth gun-running incident. He fought in the G.P.O. During the Rising and was shot in Parnell/Moore Street on 28 April 1916 and died some time later.
