<p>A letter from Patrick C. Hayes (b.1856) to Anna O'Rahilly, the sister of Michael Joseph O'Rahilly (1875-1916). The letter concerns a suggestion made on the part of Anne to build a spire in the memory of the O'Rahilly. The letter goes on to discuss the cost of such a project. Michael Joseph O'Rahilly, self-described as 'The' O'Rahilly, was involved in the procurement of arms in the lead-up to the Rising and was involved in the Howth gun-running incident. He fought in the G.P.O. During the Rising and was shot in Parnell/Moore Street on 28 April 1916 and died some time later.</p>

Royal Marine Hotel, Kingstown, Co. Dublin. Aug. 25: 1916 Dear Miss O'Rahilly, I received your <lb/>letter here this morning. <lb/>Yes, I saw the suggestion <lb/> in the Kerryman to build <lb/>the spire to the memory <lb/> of your brother. I could <lb/> not think of undertaking <lb/> such a heavy work. <lb/> &amp; found it difficult <lb/> enough to build a <lb/> Parochial Hall. It <lb/> cost £300 and by that

<lb/>from Ballylongford subscribers <lb/>little over £100. The project <lb/> of putting in large stained <lb/> glass windows has not - <lb/><seg type="unclear">success</seg> though at all. I <lb/>was just about to com- <lb/>mence the work about <lb/> a year before the war when <lb/> the people prevailed on <lb/> me to build the Hall <lb/> first. The window scheme <lb/>will cost over £500. I <lb/>got the plans &amp; specific- <lb/>ations from an architect. <lb/> Of course in case the <lb/>work is not carried out <lb/> the money will be ret- <lb/>urned to you and your <lb/>sister. <seg type="closer"> With Kind Regards, <lb/>I remain, <lb/>Yours Sincerely, P.
