Letter from Charles Wyndham Wynne to his mother Alice Wynne, 24 March 1916
decided turn for the better
now:â as you see I have
been shifted to Lenan. Yesterday I left Dunree
went before Medical Board
in Derry and then came
out here. The Medical Board
passed me fit for home
service. This place so
far anyway seems grand 2 Compared to Dunree.
Everything much better , though of
course it's true I've hardly
had time to test it. I shall
be here anyway till the
first and then I may or
may not go back to
Dunreeâ probably I shall.
Now really I've nothing
more to say. Please
thank Em & V for their
letters I was awfully glad to get them. The
weather though very cold
is bright and the sun
quite powerful in
the middle of the day.
I wish I could see old
Wicklow again. I have just got Win's
forwarded from Dunree
please thank her very
much. I have come the conclusion
that there is really no use
having relatives unless 3 they make themselves useful
so I think perhaps if you
wrote to Gen Arthur about
me & R.F.C. it would be the
best. What do you think? I think
however it's time to wait a week
or so till I see what happens to
me here. I think most of Win's questions
are answered. I have read two
books and think the here I may read
some more . there has been some damage to the letter which may hide a full stop The Mess here is awfully
comfy and grub splendid and every-
b o dy including the Col awfully
decent and jolly. I was so delighted Father
is doing so well. I hope he'll
soon be out & about again . Your ever - loving
C.W.W. The book on induction coil was a
small paper b and I had two
copies.
Letter from Charles Wyndham Wynne (1895-1917) to his mother Alice (1833-1928). This is a short note to his mother to tell her he has been transferred to Lenan Head Fort, Clonmany, Co. Donegal, and that the medical board passed him fit for home service. He lets her know conditions are pleasant at his new quarters, but that he misses home in Wicklow. Charles Wynne served as a captain in the Royal Garrison Artillery in the First World War. His application to the Royal Flying Corps was denied in 1916 due to his poor eyesight. Charles ultimately died of wounds received at Armentieres, June 1917.
