The telegram is from Sidney Parry to Gertrude Bannister (later Parry, d. 1950) , a cousin of Sir Roger Casement (1864-1916), an Irish nationalist. Casement spent the months preceding the Easter Rising in Germany trying to induce captured Irish prisoners of war to join an ‘Irish brigade’ which would support the central powers by liberating Ireland. However, when it was clear that the Rising would not have sufficient assistance to make it a success Casement returned to Ireland on a German submarine in an attempt to dissuade the Rising's leaders from going ahead. However, Casement was captured and after the Rising he was sentenced to death for treason. Casement was hanged on 3 August 1916. The telegram was sent from Ewhurst in Surrey. Parry and Bannister were later married.
