Letter from Dr D. L. Nacke to Dr Thomas Kirkpatrick, 26 May 1919
Admission of Women to Higher Qualifications. I am instructed to ask if you will be good enough to
supply the following information to the Council of this College
who have at present the question of admission of women under
consideration: - 1. If you admit women to your higher qualifications. 2. When such admission was granted. 3. To what extent the admission has been taken advantage of. 4. Whether special powers had to be obtained or whether you
were empowered under your Charter to grant such admission
without any legal parliamentary proceedings. 5. If the women are admitted with all the privileges of men to
the Fellowship or other qualification. 6. If they can hold office as Examiners or Office-Bearers.. Please send me a copy of your regulations. Yours faithfully, Dr. L. Nacke
Clerk of the College. The Registrar,
Royal College of Physicians of Ireland,
6 Kildare Street,
DUBLIN.
From 1910 until 1954 Thomas Percy Kirkpatrick (1869-1954) served as the registrar for the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland. He also served as the general secretary of the Royal Academy of Medicine in Ireland. He took a particular interest in what were then termed venereal diseases; to encourage his patients (many of whom were prostitutes) to attend, he held a clinic for women at a discreet early morning hour to facilitate anonymity.
