Letter from Thomas Kirkpatrick to Isabel Thompson, 19 October 1918

6 Kildare street, Dublin. 19th October, 1918. To Lady Thompson,
14 Hatch street,
Dublin. Madam, I am requested by the President and Fellows to forward you a
copy of the following resolution which was passed in solemn
silence at a meeting of the College held yesterday: Resolved: "that the President and Fellows of the Royal College
of Physicians of Ireland desire to place upon record their deep
regret at the great loss sustained by scientific Medicine, by
the College and by the individual Fellows of the College through
the tragic death of Sir William Henry Thompson, K.B.E., in the
disaster to the R.M.S. Leinster, caused by enemy action on Thursday
the 10th inst. The President and Fellows hereby express their
sympathy with Lady Thompson and the members of her family in
their terrible and sudden bereavement which has cast a shadow
also on this Festival Day of the Royal College of Physicians
of Ireland." I remain,

From 1910 until 1954 Thomas Percy Kirkpatrick (1869-1954) served as the registrar for the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland. He also served as the general secretary of the Royal Academy of Medicine in Ireland. He took a particular interest in what were then termed venereal diseases; to encourage his patients (many of whom were prostitutes) to attend, he held a clinic for women at a discreet early morning hour to facilitate anonymity. Isabel Thompson was the wife of Sir William Henry Thompson, a physiologist.
