1 BISHOP'S HOUSE,
JOHN'S HILL,
WATERFORD Oct. 4th 16. Dear Mr. Redmond, I beg to thank you for your
letter just received. Had your friend wished to
be strictly accurate, he
would have stated, that your
action, as representative of 2 our Catholic City, was to
those, who heard of it, unintelligible.
Though this matter did not,
and does not affect me
personally, you will, I think
agree in their view, that my
priests and people would
rightly consider me untrue
to my position, did I not
strive to maintain its
dignity, and resent even an
apparent slight. 3 I pray God to guide you
as regards the future of our
dear country. I am

Letter from Reverend Bernard Hackett (1863-1932) to John Redmond (1856-1918) regarding a misrepresentation of Hackett's position. In 1916 Bernard Hackett was ordained and serving as the Bishop of Waterford and Lismore. John Redmond (1856-1918) was an MP and leader of the Irish Parliamentary Party. He was instrumental in securing the promise of Home Rule from Asquith's liberal government. Upon the outbreak of war, Redmond addressed a group of Irish Volunteers at Woodenbridge, Co. Wicklow, encouraging them to fight with the British Army to ensure the implementation of Home Rule. Redmond's words split the Irish Volunteers across the country. The Easter Rising shocked Redmond, who condemned it bitterly. Nonetheless he appealed for leniency towards those who had not been involved in planning the Rising.
