Phibsborough. Friday
send some from the
insiders in a few
days. write soon
won't you. I'll save
up news now &
when I hear from you
again I'll send you
all —
All good wishes,
your old friend
Jim Ellis
My Dear Jim, I got your letter
yesterday & I was delighted to hear
from you. I have been trying to
find out your address for weeks
but no one seemed to know your
where about.— I didn't meet any
of your girl friends or rather
I didn't know any of them. I
asked you a long time ago for an
intro to one of them & you didn't
give it. aren't you sorry now that
his majesty has extended his
hospitality to you. I would look
after them for you. I was certainly
surprised at the Rebellion. Belloe has
blundered badly.— your spelling
of the gentlemans name was faulty— 2 but he was often wrong before &
will again. I suppose there isnt
much use in telling you anything
that hasnt already appeared in
our West Briton press. The Censor
might be melted to tears & dry
them with my letter. This much
is true that Dunleavy who hasnt
been to mass for seven years has
been to all the requiems. The staff
here is alright except mac & you
know his views arent up to very
much. He didnt make a statement
in the school however only in the
theatre where we went as far as
we could with the remembrance
of September before our Eyes. Tobin
is fine. He pays all kinds of tribute
to the bravery of the Volunteers. The
scam is over. fine were up.
Miss DFarrel got 1st 2nd Honours 3 Landers Walsh & OMahony got it.
& Murphy was stuck again in
medicine. no one else was up.
Courtney is still in Vincent's He is
acting in the capacity of Chiropodist
to the Hospital. He amputated a nurses
corn. It went septic & she was three
days in bed. Then He was caught in the
ward with D Ryan the other night &
gave him hell. Ryan told her that
Courtney was working from 'the Rising
of the Sun till the going down there off"
Ryan is in Vincent's now. Very few
joined. Blake is the only recent
recruit. There were a few to go from the
mater. Lynch & Stokes among the
number. I dont think they are going now.
I told Delaney & Spain to write to you
& also I told Meskel among others
that you send your love to them. I gave
the message individually. Meskel got
your address. so I hope to congratulate
you when I see you again. I was
sorry your sisters got such rough 4 treatment. They are out now & not
looking any the worse. Of course I was
surprised at arrests of ladies. If I want
you to get the letter I had better say nothing
more. Probably the Censor doesnt swear
himself & beside as our leader John Redmond
says I wouldnt say anything that would
interfere with the friendly relation now
existing between the sister countries However
Jim I wish you were back. I'd beat
you at snooker now. I'm getting to be a dub
at it. I might wait & be up with
you in March but Johnny will have
to give me permission in September.
If he doesnt I'll make you my assistant
woeks you must have been almost
mad for the first three weeks you were
away. The treatment evidently was not
even as good as that given to criminals
at least I hope you will be much better
off in Wales. I suppose you was sadly
disappointed at the treatment you got. you
never expected such did you? There arent
any Volunteers in Vincents. There was a
young girl there who was in the Surgeons
& she was arrested but as she wasnt
better.— she was wounded — Kennedy kicked
up a row & she was sent back again.
She was taken without his knowledge. I'm
sending you some cigarettes now. we will
Reply to James Ryan from his friend Jim Ellis. Ellis hadn't known where Ryan was until he received his letter. He tells Ryan about how their common acquaintances from UCD are getting on in different Dublin Hospitals. He comments on the rough treatment Ryan had received in Stafford prison before being moved to Frongoch, where he was at the time writing. He mentions not wanting to write about political matters in case the letter is censored.
