Letter from Herbert Pim to John Sweetman, 28 September 1916
Dublin on Thursday next, &
hope to call upon you about 11am.
As a matter of fact I expect to
be returning from the south, & will be
in the city at 10pm on Wednesday, after leaving
my son at college Your remarks are very consoling.
We must forge ahead; & I think the
public is keen for a sane & practical
policy You have my sympathy about the
attempts upon your pocket, There
is no living nowadays unless one is
a farmer or a munition worker. Slán agus beanacht Herbert M Pim
Letter from Herbert Pim (1883-1950) to John Sweetman (1884-1936). Pim published a pamphlet series entitled 'Tracts of our times', including writings by Patrick Pearse, and in early 1916 founded the literary and political monthly, 'The Irishman'. He joined the Volunteer muster in Coalisland at Easter 1916, and was arrested after the Rising and deported to Reading gaol. He was released in September 1916. Sweetman was a member of Sinn Féin and patron to Arthur Griffith. In 1915 he spoke out against conscription and was arrested after the 1916 Rising and interned in England until the end of May 1916. Pim writes to inform Sweetman that he will be in Dublin on Thursday and hopes to meet up with him.
