ARA COELI
ARMAGH I have great pleasure
in stating that I have
known Sir John R O,Connell
for several years, and have
always found him a
gentleman of high charac-
ter, capable, energetic, and
always ready to devote him-
self to help on any good
work which came in his
way. I believe that his
professional eminence,
his strict integrity and
his conscientious de-
votion to duty fit
him for the successful

discharge of any public
duty with which he
may be entrusted; and
that in any public
office to which he
may be appointed
he will be found an
intelligent, zealous
and faithful public
Official. +Michael Card. Logue
Armagh 29th March 1916.
This letter was written by Cardinal Michael Logue (1840-1924), archbishop of Armagh
(1887-1924). Logue was resolutely opposed to republican violence, such as that of
Easter Week 1916, but described the British reaction to the violence as 'foolish and
pernicious'.
In this letter Logue praises Sir John Robert O'Connell (1868-1943), after knowing
him for many years and states that no matter what office he is appointed to he will
be found to be an intelligent and zealous official.
