Letter from Marie Martin to her mother Mary Martin, 31 January 1916
Malta My very dearest Mother It was a great pleasure
& surprise to see Aunt Lily &
to hear how she left you all
which cheered me up greatly
she has been very lucky &
got to the Hospital & I think
I ought to be quite happy it is
rather a party in a way for her
we are so slack as I think
one is much happier busy
we are so slack now also
I got 48 hours off again
which turned in very
useful as it gave me an 2 opportunity of seeing her we, drove out this
afternoon to Antonio Palace & then visited the
C. Convent where A. Lily is getting some caps
made. I hope by the time this reaches
you, you will have had some more news
I feel sure poor boy he is a prisoner
& can only pray he may be well treated
& that it will not be long before we can
get into communication with him so that
he will not feel so lonely. A. Lily is in great form & I am delighted
to have her here as it will make it more
homely especially as we have so much time
on our hands. I shall write you a real long letter tonight
when I get back to St G. but this is
just a hurried note to let you know
all goes well with me hoping you are
the same. A.L. thinks I have got
disgustingly fat - so cheer up - Give my fondest love to all Your most loving daughter Marie 3 On A. . . Mrs Martin,
Greenbank
Monkstown,
Co Dublin
Ireland
This is a letter from Marie Helena Martin (1892-1975) to her mother Mary Martin (1866-1955) in Dublin. Marie was a born in Dublin and trained as a nurse at the out break of World War I. Two of Marie's brothers joined the British Army at this time, one of whom was killed in action. Marie served as a nurse in Malta, Leeds and France, and later set up the Medical Missionaries of Mary. In the letter Marie expresses her surprise at seeing her aunt Lily, who has signed up to be a nurse. She goes on to state that Lily is in good form and that she is having capes made for her. The letter ends with Marie stating she will write her mother a long letter when she gets back from St Georges.
