15 Barrington St
Limerick Oct. 7th 1916 Dear Fr. Albert Many thanks
for your dear kind
letter. It gives me great
pleasure to know I am
always remembered in
your prayers. I am not a good hands
at praying, but my thoughts
are a prayer for you and
more preists like you
2
Laura and I were sorry to
miss you that day more
especially as Laura may
not be in Dublin
for a long time. I am going up on Monday
and taking Tom to the
Doctor. Madge and Norah
are going also but they
are not going to stay in
Dublin,the are going to
Glendalough for a rest.
Madge will call to see
you. she was glad she had
not sent on the canary.
She is not well, but she hopes
3
Glendalough will pull her 3)
up she is going to see
the prisoners in Portland
and Reading before returning
to Limerick. My mother is getting better,
but she has become an old
woman suddenly. up know
she looked as young as
any of us and was full
of energy. Now she is tired
all the time and life seems
a trouble to her. I will call to see you as soon
as I have Tom settled. 4) Limerick does not agree with
me, I am tired all the time
here. I have an unsettled feel
here too, as if it were only
on a visit I was, I find it
hard to realize that my
home and everything is
gone the only thing left is
hope and if our hopes for
Ireland's future are fulfilled
the sacrifices will have been
well worth the making.
Things look black at present
but the darkest hour is before
the dawn, I hope to have a good long
chat with you next week. until
then good bye. Yours very Sincerely,
Kathleen Clarke
This is a letter from Kathleen Clarke (née Daly) (1878-1972), republican activist,
to Fr Albert Bibby (1877-1958). Kathleen Clarke's husband, Thomas Clarke (1858-1916),
and brother, Edward 'Ned' Daly, were both executed for their part in the Easter Rising
and Kathleen had been an active republican before the Rising. Fr Albert, born Thomas
Bibby, was a Capuchin priest in Church Street in Dublin. In the aftermath of the Easter
Rising, he ministered to a number of rebel prisoners in Kilmainham Gaol, including
some of the executed leaders.
