Letter from Eóin B. Mac Giolla Chomghaill to Nancy O'Rahilly, 28 July 1916.
my hurried post card of yester-
day to offer yourself and your
darling child my best blessing.
Mrs. Humphreys sent me the good
news. I will make a fervent
memento in my Masses for
yourself and baby that God top left corner of this page contains a P.S. which is transcribed on the final page 2 and his Blessed Mother may
keep you and bless you
and cheer you, too, in the
loveliness of this little visitor's
coming. Yet who shall say
the martyred father is far
off? We may thinkit, that
is all. It is not so. Another
Christian Child for Heaven
is added glory to the
hero who has fallen and
he is near to rejoice with 3 Mother and child, and God
Himself is near to fill his
stainless little heart. The
friends of God must be with
their God. Yes 'tis still the
same united family. The mothers and wives and
sisters and daughters of the
brave men ought to be the
proudest women on Erin's
soil today. Tens of thousands
are jealous of your story. 4 And the glory of being their
children! After being a Catholic
and a priest I would ask
no greater myself. I con-
gratulate little Michael
Joseph! May he take his great
father's place for his mother &
for Ireland! I send you a little song
specially dedicated to the
mothers, wives, sisters & daughters of
our heroes. God bless you, a
bhean uasal, and God bless your
little ones. Do Chara le mor mheas Eóin B. Mac Giolla Chomghaill, (L.B. Coyle) the following P.S. is form the top corner of the first page of this letter 5 P.S. An Agnus Dei enclosed for baby with a blessing
A letter from Eoin C. Mac Giolla Comhghall to Nancy O'Rahilly (1875-1961). The writer (a Catholic Priest) has just heard that Mrs.O'Rahilly has given birth to a son and describes the event as 'added glory for the hero who has fallen'. He promises to remember the family in his Masses and he says that the women related to these brave men 'ought to be the proudest women on Erin's soil today'. Finally he congratulates 'little Michael Joseph' and hopes he will take his great father's place for his mother and for Ireland.Nancy O'Rahilly was a member of the Provisional Council of Cumann na mBan at the founding in 1914 and the wife of Michael Joseph O'Rahilly, self-described as 'The' O'Rahilly (1875-1916). The O'Rahilly fought in the Easter Rising and was shot in Parnell/Moore Street on 28 April 1916 and died some time later. Nancy was pregnant at the time of her husband's death – the child was born three months later.
