2/1 Lothians & Border Horse Yeomanry, Amisfield House, Haddington. 7th February
1916 Dear Sir H.Grattan Bellew Re Atwell (Robert)
He is a nice sort of man:
I think him stupid.
He has been in this regiment for more than
a year, and even now cannot ride.
He is a poor shot, and slow;
He is otherwise all right.
I have not promoted him ; nor am I thinking
of doing so. I have no objection to recommending him for
a Commission. Before joininghe can be gazetted he will
have to go before our Brigadier, who may
2
or may not sanction it. Yours very truly George Scott
Letter from George Scott to Sir Henry Grattan Bellew (1860-1942) regarding the application
of Robert Atwell for a commission in Sir Henry's Batallion, the 4th Connaught Rangers.
George Scott did not have a high opinion of Atwell, writing that he was 'stupid' as
after more than a year in the Lothians and Border Horse Yeomanry he still could not
ride. He nevertheless recommended him for a commission.Sir Henry Christopher Grattan
Bellew was the third baronet of Mount Bellew in County Galway. He held the rank of
Lieutenant-Colonel, 4th Battalion Connaught Rangers. His son, sir Charles Christopher
(1887-1948) held the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel, King's Royal Rifle Corps. He was
decorated with the award of the Military Cross (M.C.) in 1918.
