Seamus Ua Faolain Uas
In this letter, Liam Mellows inquires if Seumas Ua Faoláin has any more copies of
Major Casserley's book on “War training for Volunteers” which he had bought from him
the previous week. He requests half a dozen copies.Liam Mellows (1892-1922) was a
revolutionary nationalist. He was a principle organiser of Fianna Éireann, the radical
nationalist boy scout movement, and he grew increasingly active in the Irish Republican
Brotherhood and the Irish Volunteers. During Easter Week of 1916, Mellows led attacks
on barracks in Oranmore and Athenry. He was executed as an irregular by the Free State
government during the Civil War.Seumas Ua Faoláin [Seamus Whelan] was a publisher.
In December 1916 his company, Whelan & Son, published the first printed edition
of The Soldier's Song [Amhrán na bhFiann], later to become the Irish national anthem.
