Letter from James Davidson to his mother, Clara Mary Davidson, 19 December 1915
of news but hope this may reach you
on Xmas day to takeyou all my best
wishes. I think there is no doubt now
that we shall be here for Xmas & probably
even for some weeks longer so we are
arranging to spend a jolly a day as
possible. The 13 th officers are to dine together
at the little café where I am billited & there
is to be a sing song afterwards. I expect
we shall have quite a cheery evening.
The enclosed P.C.will be interesting to
you especially the one marked 1 & the two
marked 2. The other 3 are of places we
have been to. It will be a quick Xmas
for you all this year & I am afraid
it is almost too much to believe that
the War will be over before the next one
2 comes round, however nowadays it
seems better not to think too much in advance. Was in the Roman Catholic
Cathedral this morning (1) & enjoyed the
music so much. They played god save
the King on the great Organ & I never thought
it could sound so fine. Wish my fondest love to all your loving son James Am only enclosing 3 post cards, the others
I will send with my next letter. 3 5 SAINT_RIQUIER,â L'Ãglise â Détail du PortailâLL. 4 5 ABBEVILLE. â L'Ãglise S t Vulfran â Détail du Portail, â LL. 6 7 ABBEVILLE. â Rue Alfred Cendré. âLL. 8 9 On Active Service Incl 28th 23 rd Dec/15 Mrs. S.C. Davidson Seacourt Bangor Co. Down Ireland 19/12/15

A letter from James Davidson (1877-1916) sending Christmas wishes to his mother, Clara Mary, enclosing postcards which will interest her. He describes a visit to the Roman Catholic Cathedral where he enjoyed the organ music, including God Save the King. The officers will dine in a cafe at Christmas and have a sing song afterwards. He is looking forward to that. He concludes that it is too much to believe the war will be over before next Christmas. This letter is part of a large correspondence from Captain James Davidson to his parents. Davidson, who was Managing Director of the Sirocco Engineering Works in Belfast, served with 13 Royal Irish Rifles and the Machine Gun Corps. His letters describe his experiences while training in England and serving in France. He was killed on 1 July 1916, the first day of the Battle of the Somme.
