a few days after
Rebellion by
GT Portobello Barracks Dublin. Thursday morning My dear Miss Lyden, Just
a few lines to
let you know I am going on
OK. We are kept very busy
here at present. Do you know
it all seems like a bad
nightmare. I am Try and
let me know how things are
going on up there. Have the
people gone home yet. I
tried to get on the phone to
Kellep. but it is only open
for military purposes. We
have 4 Battalions of the Notts
and Derby Regiment and
two of the Sherwood Foresters
2
One of the Sherwood Foresters and
one of the Veterans Corps were
brought in here dead, during
the night. I will never forget
the shooting of Sheehy Skeffington,
the Editor of the 'Eye-opener'
(He wont open his eyes again)
Also the Editor of the 'Toiler'
We have Alderman Kelly a
prisoner here also. I believe the city is
in a horrible state. I had
a decent sleep last night I
managed to get a bed. that
was the first time I got one
and the first time I had my
clothes off since Sunday
Have you been able to get
3
into town at all, and what about 'Peg o' my heart'
also Lal, You can take a kiss from me. also
give them one. If the post is going again and
if my people are gone home, would you please drop
them a line letting them know I am all right.
Dear knows when I will be able to see you again
as we expect to be confined to Barracks for
weeks. It is jolly awkward for me here as I
have nothing except what I stood in no razor
brushes or anything. We are on War Rations
Bully Beef and Biscuits so it is proper active

Service. Early this morning the
machine guns were cracking for
all they were worth. I hear
Liberty Hall is blown up. How about Sister Mae, Mrs Mac,
Mr and Mrs Bolton. I am anxious
to know how they all are. I must now close for the
present. hoping to hear from
you soon, I am
Yours as ever J. B.

to a Miss Lyden. In his letter J.B. writes that there are four regiments battalions
of the Notts & Derby regiments, in addition to two Sherwood Forrestor battalions.
He writes about Sheehy-Skeffington and notes that Alderman Kelly is also being detained.
According to the letter soldiers have been confined to barracks and are now on war
