This is a copy of a letter written by Colonel George Francis Leverson (1857-1938).
The letter concerns the 1st Garrison Battalion of the Royal Irish Regiment. The letter
sends typed copies of two earlier letters regarding the conduct of the troops including
one by Leverson. In the letter Leverson expresses his 'extreme satisfaction' regarding
the efficiency and conduct of all the ranks of the battalion in performing their duties.
During the Great War the 1st Garrison Battalion of the Royal Irish Regiment landed
at Mudros, having sailed from Devonport on 6 September 1915. Working parties were
sent into Suvla Bay, Gallipoli, during October 1915. After the withdrawal from Gallipoli,
the battalion was sent to Egypt, where it landed on 5 February 1916 and then remained
throughout the war.
