TP Gilmartin was Archbishop of Tuam from 1918 until his death in 1939. He was noted for speaking out against violence during the War of Independence. He indicates that he is replying to a letter from O'Flanagan dated 17 October. He makes reference to having met him previously at The Gresham Hotel, Dublin and of writing to O'Flanagan's Bishop, Dr Coyne. Gilmartin states that he is awaiting a reply from Dr Coyne and is hopeful of healing the rift between O'Flanagan and Coyne. He concludes by stating that if Dr Coyne gives O'Flanagan permission to be absent from the Diocese for some time, O'Flanagan could say Mass away from the Diocese.

O'Flanagan I had, before receiving yours of the 17th,written to your Bishop about the interview we had at theGresham Hotel but have not yet received a reply. I expectone in a day or two and may perhaps have to await some morein reply to some letters of mine. Hence all I can say forthe present is, that I shall do my best to heal this unfort-unate breach. As well as I remember I said in my letter,that if you satisfied Dr. Coyne, his lordship might see hisway to give you permission to be absent for sometime fromthe Diocese, when of course you could say Mass subject tothe Code.
