Seán O'Casey expresses sympathy on Thomas Ashe's death and condemns the treatment he received, mentioning that Ashe and "other brave men [were] suffering their Purgatory at the hands of saviours ? [sic] of small nations". Thomas Ashe (* 1885) was a member of the Gaelic League, the Irish Republican Brotherhood (IRB) and co-founder of the Irish Volunteers.
