Letter from Gerald Horan (1880-1949) of the Lord Chancellor's Secretary's Office to Jeremiah Lane, a justice of the peace in Cork, explaining how Lane has now been removed from commission. Lane had made comments at a meeting of the Cork Corporation that were considered inappropriate. His explanation that the comments were taken out of context was, according to the letter, not deemed acceptable.

 LORD CHANCELLOR'S SECRETARY'S OFFICE, Four Courts, Dublin, 16th day of March 1916 Sir, I have placed your letter of the 14th inst. before the Lord Chancellor, who directs me to say that he has not over- looked any context in which the words mentioned in my letter of the 13 inst. were used by you. He considers that no context can justify the use of those words by a gentleman holding His Majesty's Commission of the Peace and which were publicly adopted by you when sitting in Court. The Lord Chancellor is sorry that you in no way regret the matter and he has no course except to remove your name from the Commission of the Peace.
