His explanation that the comments were taken out of context was, according to the letter, not deemed acceptable. </p>

LORD CHANCELLOR'S SECRETARY'S OFFICE, <lb/>Four Courts, Dublin, <lb/>16th day of March 1916 Sir, I have placed your letter of the 14th inst. before the <lb/> Lord Chancellor, who directs me to say that he has not over- <lb/> looked any context in which the words mentioned in my letter <lb/> of the 13 inst. were used by you. He considers that no context can justify the use of those <lb/> words by a gentleman holding His Majesty's Commission of the <lb/> Peace and which were publicly adopted by you when sitting in <lb/> Court. The Lord Chancellor is sorry that you in no way regret <lb/> the matter and he has no course except to remove your name <lb/> from the Commission of the Peace. Accordingly I transmit herewith the Writ of Supersedeas <lb/> to discharge you from further acting as a Justice of Peace. I am, Sir, <lb/> Your obedient Servant, G H. <lb/>Jeremiah Lane, Esq. 9 South Main St, <lb/> Cork.
