Letter from Lord French, John Denton Pinkstone French, 1st Earl of Ypres (1852-1925), commander of all British forces on home service, 1916-1918, to Sir John Maxwell (1859-1929), primarily responsible for government policy in the immediate aftermath of the Rising. The letter was written in the aftermath of the Easter Rising in Dublin, before the first executions of the Rising's leaders. Lord French congratulates Maxwell on the 'good work which has been done in Ireland'. He says he showed Maxwell's letter to the Prime Minister who was 'very pleased with it all'. French indicates that he has made enquiries about getting ten Camalters (shire horses) for Maxwell's cavalry.

I was with the Prime Minister this afternoon & I showed him your letter & report. He is very worried with it all. I asked you again, what the Cavalry is I request you might perhaps want a request or two. I don't think the casualties were excessive in view of the work which was done. G.H.Q.
