This is taken from a collection of letters, poems, articles and other documents of Roger Casement (1865-1916) and his family covering his career in the British Diplomatic Service as well as his activities in the Irish Revolutionary movement, 1889-1945.

This letter is is a farewell letter by John McGoey written to his comrades in the Irish Brigade the day before he is sent to Ireland by the Germans via Denmark. The Irish Brigade had been raised by Casement from Irish prisoners in German prisoner of war camps with the aim of fighting for Irish independence but the venture was ultimately unsuccessful.
