The letters of William Upton Tyrrell ('Willie') to his father William J.H. Tyrrell, mother Elizabeth, sister Minnie and brother Robert are a notable example of wartime correspondence. The letters - nearly 200 in total - are mostly written by William to his family while in active service with the Royal Irish Rifles in France. Willie discusses his life and the lives of other soldiers in the trenches, as well as life at Ballindoolin, the family estate. The family name 'Tyrrell' is sometimes misspelled 'Tyrell' in correspondence to the family. Summary of the present letter: Miss Ball sent Willie an Irish Life magazine with a cartoon of two cats marked. One cat was an R.A.M.C. doctor and the other a soldier asking for sick leave. A young American officer is staying with William's regiment. The American is amazed they are sleeping in beds and eating five-course meals. Leave has been extended.

I will have to get somehorrid post card to send her. Thatwill settle her perhaps. I don't know if I mentionedyesterday that the new writing padarrived at a most oppertune moment We have a young American officerattached to us here just to seewhat things are like. He seemsa very nice fellow. He lives withme in my dug out. He came upwith ideas which were all wrongHe had an idea that he wasgoing to somewhere where there wasa war on. So he was ratherastonished when he saw meputting on pyjamas and getting into my bed comfortably at teno clock last night. Of course thisis not in the front line whichmakes a considerale difference.Also he expected I think to liveon bully I beef and dogbiscuits so a 5 course dinnerrather astonished him. There is no doubt I struck luckwhen I was put on signalling officerfor this tour. Of course I will go back to my company as soon asever we go out. Young the propersigs officer is just having arest.
