William Upton Tyrrell writes to wish his sister a happy birthday. He is in a different country than he was before. The streets are paved with big stones. His journey took 54 hours and was mainly by train.

 1 April 1917 My dear Minnie, Just a birthday letter and I hope it will arrivein time. Many happy returns of the day. Here I amnow with the 2nd Batt so address my lettersaccordingly. This is a totally different kind ofplace to any I have seen out here before. Ofcourse it would be as we are in a differentcountry. We are out in huts several milesbehind the lines and you would not knowthat there was a war on at all unless you weretold. I do not know how long we will behere as but when we do leave it is to gofurther back from the line so I do not expectto be in the trenches for some time. There isno necessity for me to write every day andthere will be nothing to write about. It wasa long journey up from the base and forsome unknown reason they brought usround in a semicircle. The journey occupiedaltogether about 54 hours. I arrived with thebattalion at 4 am this morning le LuckilyI met some other officers who were coming here too and they knew the way. There was acart for our kit at the station. We had about5 miles to walk so when we got in it didnottake me long to get to sleep. It was luckythat I had lots of grub for the train. Onefellow had a tommy cooker (which I forgotto get) and I had lots of Bovril so wemade it but we had no water that wecould be sure of so we made it with Vichywater. It is some thing like soda waterbut went very well. This place is veryclean and dry. The roads are all paved withbig paving stones. The lane into the campis the only bad bit we met at all. There are very few here whom I knowexcept some who got their commisionslately from the ranks. The C.O and seem very nice as indeed does every one. We are near some good towns so Ido not think I need any parcels at presentas we can get most things. I will writeand let you know if there is anythingI want but of course I have not gotsettled down properly yet as I have onlybeen here a few hours. The train we came in had only two speedsslow and stop! and it usually went atthe latter speed. but it was quite interestingin the day time. It stopped for hours insome places but one never knew when it wouldgo on again so could not get out thoughI would very much like to have seensome of the places we passed thro'.I would have nearly had time to go &see Charlie Davison but had no ideahow long the train would wait. Certainly this is a very quiet place. Fardifferent to where I was before. Jack Daymust be somewhere about here I think.Also Dick White.We have a nice sitting room here with lotsof papers etc to read and nice tables towrite at. I am writing this in it. You seehow far back we are when we can dothat. I do not know when the letters comein or go out or anything here but they do not got ti go till evening sometime so this willgo today. Be sure and tell me how longit takes my letters to reach you I am beginning to forget the numbers of my letters already so dont be surprisedif they go wrong. However I will try to keep anote of them as it is a very good check. I may be near where Garrett is too butif so he is not near where you thought he was. I met Major Hume Kelly down atthe base the other day. You remember hewas adjutant of the camp I was at before There is nothing more to say that Ican think of at present so with very bestwishes and with best love to all Your most affec brother Willee.
