            <p>The data in these XML files was generated based on a data dump from the Magellan database (https://github.com/Maynooth-Center-for-Digital-Humanities/Magellan). Each database record has been converted to a JSON file (https://github.com/letters1916static/letters-data/tree/main/json). The element section of the JSON file contains the TEI-encoded contents of the letters. The TEI XML has been cleaned and made well-formed using a Python script (https://github.com/letters1916static/letters-data/tree/main/src).</p>

             141/8/8 Drumboe Castle<lb/>Co Donegal 15.3.23 Dear Sir, I now take in hand the very<lb/>sad task, of compling with Charlie's wishes.<lb/>He wants the family to reconcile themselves<lb/>as far as possible to Gods Holy Will. He himself (R.I.P) was quite reconciled to<lb/>his fate, and bore it bravely, as he bore<lb/>all disadvantages, during the three years<lb/>I knew him. It shall comfort you to know the officers<lb/>here done all they could for them.<lb/>They had the attendance of three priests<lb/>during the greater part of the preceding<lb/>night, and in the morning they attended<lb/>Mass, and received Holy Communion. They<lb/>were all quite cheerful, as they knew they<lb/>were going to meet their Maker, and all were<lb/>very well prepared.
            <pb n="2" facs="L1916_5207_img_0_2"/>
             2. <lb/>Now Mr Daly I know it is beyond my powers of<lb/>comprehension the loss you suffer, but still try<lb/>and do as dear Charlie asked. We must all<lb/>bow to God and His holy Will. My comrades here, wish me to convey to<lb/>you their heartfelt sorrow at the loss<lb/>of such a fine comrade &amp; chum.<lb/>I might add Charlie always made friends<lb/>no matter where he was, and it continued<lb/>even in captivity. May he rest in Peace Believe me<lb/>Yours in sorrow<lb/>Jas. J. Donaghy
