Letter from J. Beatty to Edward Carson (1854-1935). Carson was a prominent Unionist Politician. Originally a practicing solicitor from Dublin, Carson's opposition to the proposed third Home Rule bill made him the figure head of Unionism throughout the island. He was the centerpiece of the speaking tour that culminated in Ulster Day (28 September 1912), when just under half a million signed Ulster's solemn league and covenant pledging to use ‘all means which may be found necessary to defeat the present conspiracy to set up a home rule parliament in Dublin’. Carson inaugurated the Larne gunrunning in 1914 which armed the UVF, many of whom Carson would encourage to join the British Army throughout the First World War.

I beg to send you a few particulars of events in Ireland which may be of use to you in the debate on Redmond's motion, which i notice is to take place on Wednesday next. Please do not disclose my name as I could not live here if you did:- On Sunday 24 thSeptr. there was a hurling and football tournament in Limerick City. Excursion trains had been arranged to bring contingents from Dublin and other parts, but these were all cancelled ont the 23rd Sept. Still large crowds came from Limerick County Clare & Tipperary. When the tournament concluded over a thousand young men "fell in" to order in the football field and marched through the City (Limerick) in military order. This large crown halted in front of William St. Police Barracks and cheered and shouted for Sinn Feinn and the Dublin Rebels. When they satisfied themselves they marched away. The authorities did not interfere; and I have not heard that any one was made amenable for this disloyal and rebellious demonstration. On the following Sunday (1:10:16) the Counties of Limerick and Tipperary played their finals in Dungarvan. The excursions to Dungarvan were not restricted. There were ten thousand people present according to the Clonmel Nationalist & Chronicle. Crowds of these young men sang rebel songs, and cheered for Sinn Fein and the Dublin Rebels in the public streets. In the house Public house of a man named Coughlan which was open during the evening, seditious speeches were delivered, and the health of the Kaiser toasted by a man standing on a porter barrel and responded to with the greatest enthusiasm by crowds inside and outside the house, and nothing has been done since by the authorities. This matter has barely been reported: the Inspector in Waterford has a peculiar way of doing things. He wants to please the R.C. bishop & clergy. I hear he acted in the capacity of a steward and not as a police officer at Mr. Redmond's meeting. He stood on the platform in Uniform and surveyed those in the hall before Mr Redmond appeared. You may make any use you like of this information which is true but you will please keep my name a secret. I could not live here if it were known I wrote this. I am an Ex. Sergt. of RIC & now an Inspector in the N.S.P.C.C. I hear and see a lot. If this kind of matter is any use I would gladly supply more. I am Sir Yours obediently T.
