Letter from Mabel FitzGerald (née Washington McConnell) (1884-1958) wife of Desmond and mother of Garret, writing to an unidentified correspondent regarding the Rising stating that Desmond is now in Dartmoor. From other letters by Mabel we known that Desmond Fitzgerald was in Dartmoor from June 1916.

Desmond spoke often ofyou during the nine days hespent here at home with meafter the Rebellion before hisarrest; he thought a greatdeal of you & urged me toget to know you & since he was arrested he asked me onseveral occasions if I had comeacross you yet. I grieve for you, Aoife,in your loss; it must leavea terrible aching blank. I knowhow it feels for I thought allthose long days from Tuesdayto Saturday that Desmond wasdead. And life didn't seem tohold much for me. You fooldear with all before you,it is dreadfully sad to havelost your friend so. But Iknow you don't grudge himto Ireland and must have greatpride in his willing sacrifice.For their names shall beremembered forever. I did indeed say aprayer for your friends' soul none the less fervent for anybeing a Protestant and I willtell Desmond about him and askhim to pray for him when Iget an opportunity. But theyall went straight to HeavenI am sure - I have heardpriests say so too. I am not supposed tosee Desmond now for fourwhole months or hear if he isalive or dead. Unless gets thembetter treatment before then. He is in - wentquite gaily and cheerfully ofcourse. I was very glad to have his farewell letter and I wasmuch touched by O'Reilly's thoughtfulness to sending mea line to say how woefulDesmond was; I suppose hethought Desmond would neverget out alive and wanted toleave me something to helpto make it seem worthwhile. Forgive this scribble;I am in great haste. Iwould like to meet you andshould be very glad if youcould come and see me. Ifnot we will meet in townat some informal eventI am sure.
