Letter from Edward Carson (1854-1935) to Herbert Henry Asquith (1852-1928). Asquith was Liberal Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1908 to 1916. Carson was a prominent Unionist Politician. Originally a practicing solicitor from Dublin, Carson's opposition to the proposed third Home Rule bill made him the figure head of Unionism throughout the island. He was the centerpiece of the speaking tour that culminated in Ulster Day (28 September 1912), when just under half a million signed Ulster's solemn league and covenant pledging to use ‘all means which may be found necessary to defeat the present conspiracy to set up a home rule parliament in Dublin’. Carson inaugurated the Larne gunrunning in 1914 which armed the UVF, many of whom Carson would encourage to join the British Army throughout the First World War.

 Private 9th May, 1916 The enclosed is from Dr. Crozier, the Archbishop of Armagh, who knows the North of Ireland probably better than any living man. You will see it refers to the dangers of trying to disarm the Ulster Volunteers. I think it right myself also to add that I entirely agree with every word he says and I earnestly hope nothing will be done that will create any risk. I have already through Bonar Law put an- other proposal before you, which probably will be going as far as is necessary, and it may be that, if the disarmament of these men is resolved upon, it will be necessary for me to wash my hands of the whole matter.
