The letter is from Sir Matthew Nathan (1862-1939), under-secretary for Ireland, to Sir James MacMahon (1865-1954), secretary to the Post Office in Ireland. In the letter, Nathan writes that he is unsure of what action to take regarding a letter he had received and asks to meet MacMahon to discuss it. The letter in question was regarding John Holland, an overseer for the post office in Limerick who had been reduced in rank and salary for disciplinary offences. Holland claimed that the action was the result of a conspiracy to drive him out as he was not a supporter of Sinn Féin and had strong connections with the army and asked that it be overturned. Nathan later handed in his resignation after the Easter Rising had caught him unprepared and he was criticised in a commission of enquiry into the rebellion. MacMahon, a Catholic, himself became under-secretary in 1918.
