<p>Letter from Francis Sheehy Skeffington to Joseph Skeffington regarding various topics, ranging from literature to politics. Francis also mentions the censorship of his correspondence and that he has bee feeling unwell recently.

Francis Sheehy Skeffington, journalist, was a prominent feminist, activist and co-founder of the Irish Women's Franchise league in 1908. In 1912, he and his wife, Hanna Sheehy Skeffington (1877-1946), founded the suffragist newspaper The Irish Citizen. A staunch pacifist and nationalist, Sheehy Skeffington opposed Irish involvement in the Great War. During the Easter Rising, he attempted to organise a civilian defence force to prevent looting and saved the life of a British officer under fire. Arrested on the evening of Tuesday 25 April 1916, Sheehy Skeffington and two other civilians were shot by firing squad on the morning of Wednesday 26 April.

Joseph Bartholomew Skeffington (1850-1919) was a school inspector and father of Francis Sheehy Skeffington. Francis was privately educated by his father who believed that education, logic and discipline solved all problems.</p>

11,Grosvenor place, <lb/>Rathmines,Dublin. 30 — 1 — 16. My Dear Father, Many thanks for your letter and enclosure, here duly on Friday <lb/>Lire all of other letters that reach me, it bore obvious signs of having <lb/>been steamed and re-gummed. As for American letters, I have pri— <lb/>vate information that some letters which left Ireland early in decem— <lb/>ber (just after the new and rigorous censorship was instituted ) were <lb/>detained in Liverpool till last week! This in itself, apart from <lb/>probable detention, would greatly interrupt correspondence. A <lb/>letter i sent to Holland took 13 days to arrive; the reply took nine <lb/>days to reach me; these letters are openly censored, — that is to <lb/>say, they are marked "Opened by censor" when they arrive. A cable <lb/>I sent to Holland was never delivered at all; I am having question <lb/>asked about this, and claiming refund of the fee; but I do not expect <lb/>to get any satisfaction O'Neill's vote for the mayoralty leaves me little prospect for <lb/>that position I mentioned; but I am continuing my canvass of the Cor— <lb/>poration, less with any expectation of this particular post than with <lb/>a view to remaining them of my existence in case anything else turns <lb/>up. Murray, the cauces candidates, is certain to get it. Whether I <lb/>will let my name go forward to a vote depends on the number of pro— <lb/>mises I can get. My article on "A Forgotten Small Nationality" (written in septem— <lb/>ber and paid for in October!) will appear in the "Century Magazine" <lb/>for February. I have a had a touch of cold and sore throat the last few days <lb/>(which I never had in America, though — or because! — I was using my

throat a great deal more over there. Otherwise we are all in good <lb/>form. I hope you are keeping well yourself. The weather is much <lb/>milder these last few days. I have read Haig's books, and thought them rather extreme; <sic>shal</sic> <lb/>I post them to<seg type="del">o</seg> you? they are very suggestive, however.
