Each database record has been converted to a JSON file (https://github.com/letters1916static/letters-data/tree/main/json). The element section of the JSON file contains the TEI-encoded contents of the letters. The TEI XML has been cleaned and made well-formed using a Python script (https://github.com/letters1916static/letters-data/tree/main/src).</p>

11, Grosvenor Place,<lb/>Rathmines, Dublin. 5 - II. - 16. Dear Sir, During my recent visit to the United States, contributions of<lb/>mine on Irish subjects were accepted by Mr. Brisbane, Mr Ranek, and<lb/>Mr. Merrill for the Hearst newspapers. Mr. Merrill told me that,<lb/>if I wished to contribute anything on the same lines after my return<lb/>to Ireland, I ought to do so through you. I accordingly enclose a<lb/>note on a remarkable case which strikingly illustrates the feeling<lb/>in Ireland, to be used in whatever form you like, either with or<lb/>without my name. As a precaution against censorship, I am sending this in dup—<lb/>licate. Please reply through the person who will hand you the dup—<lb/>licate, — not to me direct, as my letters are opened.
