My dearest Father,   As I have only<lb/>the tip of my nose and two<lb/>fingers sticking out of a sea<lb/>of mud, I must ask you to<lb/>excuse all shortenings in<lb/>this letter written under such<lb/>difficulties. You said in your<lb/>last welcome dispatch to me<lb/>that you hoped I would soon<lb/>be shaking the dust of Belgium<lb/>off my feet. As a matter of<lb/>fact a small earthquake would<lb/>be needed at the present moment<lb/>to free me from the affectionate<lb/>embraces of Mother Earth.  However that is a trifle as I have
