<p>Letter from Irish Jesuit Chaplain, Fr Willie Doyle SJ (1873-1917) to his father, Hugh Doyle, regarding his activities before being sent to the front. Doyle writes that the men have received new kit and will now be able to deploy at a moment's notice. After noting the arrival of a Canadian regiment in the camp Doyle recounts getting hit by a practicing sniper.

Fr Willie Doyle served as a military chaplain with the 8th Battalion of the Royal Irish Fusiliers, 16th Irish Division. In April 1916 he was recommended for the Military Cross (MC) for helping to dig wounded men out of a collapsed shelter under fire. He moved to the 8th Battalion, Royal Dublin Fusiliers around Christmas, 1916. He was killed during the third battle of Ypres while going to the aid of a wounded man near Frezenberg and his body was never recovered. His name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot memorial, Zonnebeke, Belgium.</p>

             J2/83 (162)<lb/> Borden Camp<lb/>Hants 15/1/'16. My dear Father, My next letter<lb/>will, I hope, give you<lb/>definite news of the<lb/>date of our departure,<lb/>which is rumoured to<lb/>be on the 31<hi rend="superscript">st</hi> of this<lb/>month, our destination<lb/>being, as far as we<lb/>know, <seg type="unclear">Bethaine</seg> in France<lb/>where the rest of the<lb/>16<hi rend="superscript">th</hi> Division are quartered.

There has been much <lb/>activity in the Brigade <lb/>recently. First of all <lb/>the men's teeth were <lb/>overhauled, whether in <lb/>view of the large quan— <lb/>tities of German sausage <lb/>we shall capture in <lb/>Berlin, or to make <lb/>sure of being able to <lb/>take a firm grip in <lb/>the calves of retreating <lb/>foes, is not stated. The men have also been <lb/>supplied with new kit; <lb/>gas masks are ready <lb/>and a few days ago <lb/>we drew our service

I shall not<lb/>be sorry to get a move,<lb/>for though the days slip<lb/>by fast enough it seems<lb/>to me to be years since<lb/>I left Ireland. Besides<lb/>my real, and in a way<lb/>consoling, work will only<lb/>begin then, though Fr.<lb/>Kelly and myself are<lb/>not exactly idle with<lb/>some 3,000 Catholics to<lb/>look after, not including<lb/>those in other regiments. A Canadian regiment

It may interest you to<lb/>know that I was beauti—<lb/>fully plugged by six<lb/>bullets yesterday — two<lb/>through the heart, a couple<lb/>in the head and minor<lb/>casualties; wounds quite<lb/>healed now, thanks. a hidden sniper suddenly<lb/>rose and emptied his<lb/>magazine into my<lb/>poor unoffending<lb/>body, evidently thinking<lb/>he had bagged a<lb/>general, at least. May<lb/>I put on record here<lb/>that I felt profoundly<lb/>grateful that the<lb/>cartridges were blank,<lb/>else I should have been<lb/>very like a fire—bucket<lb/>by this. The last I<lb/>saw of the hostile<lb/>sniper was a form

I shall write again when<lb/>I hear about our move—<lb/>ments to let you know<lb/>definitely. All well on board — much<lb/>love to yourself and everybody<lb/>Ever your loving<lb/>Willie.
