T.J. Hanna, John Redmond's secretary, writes a second letter to John Redmond on 20 June 1916. John Redmond (1856-1918) was an MP and leader of the Irish Parliamentary Party. He was instrumental in securing the promise of Home Rule from Asquith's liberal government. Upon the outbreak of war, Redmond addressed a group of Irish Volunteers at Woodenbridge, Co. Wicklow, encouraging them to fight with the British Army to ensure the implementation of Home Rule. Redmond's words split the Irish Volunteers across the country. The Easter Rising shocked Redmond, who condemned it bitterly. Nonetheless he appealed for leniency towards those who had not been involved in planning the Rising.

 Private National Club, Derry St, Belfast. June 20/16. Dear Mr Redmond, Mr Devlin desires me to say that matters are going on satisfactorily. Reports from S. Down, S. Derry (Maghera & Magherafelt), & Co Tyrone are hopeful. Mr Gormley, M.P., reports that progress is being made in Fermanagh. The reports & letters appearing in today's papers ought to be helpful. There is a concensus of opinion that the non-publication of the proposals until after the Party meeting was a disadvantage to us. The arrangements for the Conferance are in as forward a state as possible. Approximating, the Conferance will be composed of: Visitors, 168; I. Z. , 10; M.Vs, 7; N.I.L., 103; A. V. K., 31; Public Bodies 620; total, 939. Our friends are interesting themselves in the various districts; &, if the a delegates come unpledged, there is good ground for hope of a favourable division. Mr Devlin is publishing a letter in to-morrow's papers, a copy of which is enclosed, & this will be sent to all the delegates from public bodies. He has been in touch with Mr Dillon on the phone, & our friends here have rallied round him with splendid loyalty & enthusiasm. You and Mr Dillon we expected here tomorrow night. Yours faithfully, T.
